Is soy drink healthy?

It depends. If soy drink contains less than 6 grams of sugar per 100 grams and has sufficient calcium and vitamin B12 added, it is included in the Wheel of Five. Like other legumes, soy protein lowers LDL cholesterol, which helps keep your arteries healthy.

Soy milk, soy drink or soy drink

A better known term for soy drink is soy milk. Although the taste and texture resembles milk, soy milk cannot be called milk by law. Therefore, no soy milk is allowed on packaging. Soy drink or soy drink is allowed.

What’s in soy drink?

Soy drink comes from the soybean, a legume. In addition to drinks, soy is also used to make tofu, tempeh and soybean oil. Soy is rich in protein, unsaturated fat and contains iron and vitamin B1. Do you want to drink no or less cow’s milk? Then soy drink with added calcium and vitamin B12 supplies some of the nutrients you normally get from cow’s milk.

On the label of the soy drink you can see exactly what it contains per 100 milliliters. This way you can compare and see which is the best choice.

It is best to choose a variant that meets the following criteria:

  • at least about 1.4 grams of protein
  • at least 0.24 micrograms of vitamin B12
  • at least 80 milligrams of calcium (lime)
  • up to 6 grams of sugar
  • a maximum of 1.1 grams of saturated fat

Sweetened soy drink

There is also soy drink with a flavor, such as strawberries or banana. If it contains too much sugar, it will not be included in the Wheel of Five. A glass of soy drink with more than 6 grams of sugar per 100 grams is a weekly choice . You can see how much sugar it contains on the nutrition declaration on the label. Look under the heading of carbohydrates and then “of which sugars”.

Is soy drink sustainable?

Soy drink has a lower environmental impact than cow’s milk, but the production does require a lot of energy, because the soybeans have to be processed and the fresh drink is cooled. The unsustainable cultivation also causes deforestation, desertification and erosion. But nowadays soy for drinks is usually sustainable (RTRS), organic or grown in Europe.

Is it dangerous to use soy drink when I am pregnant?

Soy products contain so-called isoflavones. If you take too much of this, it may affect the development of the baby’s genitals. As a precaution, the advice is to limit a high intake. If you choose to replace dairy with a plant-based alternative, do not take more than 4 glasses or bowls (of 150 ml) of soy drink / yogurt per day.

This way you ensure that you do not consume too many isoflavones. An enriched soy drink/yoghurt is also the most complete dairy substitute during pregnancy. Other vegetable alternatives often contain too little protein and/or nutrients. Read more about isoflavones during pregnancy. Because soy drink, unlike cow’s milk, does not contain iodine, it is good to watch your iodine intake .

Can you say that one product is healthy?

You can’t really say whether one product is healthy or not. It always depends on how much or how often you eat or drink it. We can therefore say whether a product fits into a healthy die
